Chairman Thompson Asks States for Assistance Tracking Medical Supply Requests and Deliveries
(WASHINGTON) – Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, with other Committee members, sent letters to all of the nation’s governors asking them to help the Committee account for medical supplies and equipment (such as ventilators, masks, etc.) requested from the Federal government and provided to U.S. States, territories, and the District of Columbia. The Committee has requested this information from the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Health and Human Services, but the Administration has not yet provided it.
“The Committee is deeply concerned by numerous media reports describing how the growing shortage of PPE and other essential medical equipment is affecting our nation’s capacity to safely test and care for individuals with COVID-19 and leaving medical professionals at substantial and unnecessary risk of acquiring and transmitting the disease,” writes Chairman Thompson. “The Committee urgently seeks to understand both the availability of equipment in the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) and disbursements from the SNS, as well as the provision of PPE and other medical equipment and supplies by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and other Federal entities.”
